Librarian Kathy Parker, decided that she wanted to implement the use of Kindles in elementary classrooms. She had worked with middle school teachers and the implementation of Kindles was very successful, so she met with the principal and superintendent to get approval. Once she had the approval of her administrators, she found a second grade teacher that was willing to try the Kindles with her advanced students.
The pilot started in November with a small group of five students who were reading a Mary Pope Osborne, Magic Tree House book. The students were using the features to monitor their comprehension and taking control of their own learning. The teacher was able to take anecdotal records and determine if the students were in fact using the tool to increase their comprehension.
The students were not intimidated by the equipment or the tools that they were using. They have even helped their teacher learn how to use the Kindles. The pilot has been very successful and the librarian has increased the number of Kindles at the middle and elementary levels.
