Below is the email that was sent to students when the LMC hotspot was put in place. Keep in mind, students can only access the hotspot in the LMC and it does not connect to the network. We currently do not have a process for them to log into our network with their own devices, but hope to do this in the future. This e-mail was approved by our superintendent and HS principal. Parents also have the option of requesting that their student(s) not be allowed on the hotspot and we respect that. So far, only 2 families have requested that.
The LMC now has an internet hotspot that is available to high school
students, visitors, and staff . This means you can check your Facebook
and email accounts, play games, view YouTube videos, stream music, etc. The
following rules apply:
You must sign up and get a pass *before* study hall. Space is limited to
10 students unless prior permission has been granted.
All grades must be in good standing; you cannot have any deficiency
reports.
You cannot have any overdue library books and must have paid all charges
for lost and/or damaged library items.
*The device you use is your own ipod, ipad, netbook, laptop*, etc.. The
LMC has some netbooks and ipods you can use, but they are subject to
availability.
The internet hotspot cannot be used to take part in illegal activities or
activities that threaten, harass, or bully others. Please use good
judgement or lose this privilege.
To listen to music or video, you will need to have headphones. Plan to
bring your own or buy a set from the LMC for $1.
You are responsible for ensuring you have virus protection on your device.
We are not be responsible for any viruses that are downloaded via the
hotspot.
All normal LMC rules apply - work by yourself, quiet voice, no
food/drinks, etc. Normal consequences also apply.
A password is required to access the hotspot. This password will change
frequently. Obtain the password from Mrs. Ritchie or me.
*The legal stuff:*
Information about your activities on the internet will be gathered, but is *
not* tracked the way it is for the school network/computers. This
information is gathered only so that we can meet the requirements of Charter
Communications (the internet service provider for the hotspot) and/or law
enforcment agencies and will be used in the case of potentially illegal
and/or harassing activities. By accepting the password to the hotspot, you
are also agreeing that you will provide the MAC address and/or name of your
device, if requested. Every electronic device has its own unique MAC
address and/or name. If Charter Communications and/or law enforcement
authorities request that we determine who was using the hotspot for
potentially illegal or harassing activities, you may be asked to provide
your device's MAC address and/or name. Refusal to provide the MAC address
will result in the complaint being turned over to authorities for legal
action.
